Nez Perce Tribe expands treaty hunt in Montana

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho is planning to expand its treaty hunt in Montana.

The tribe wants to extend the hunting season and take up 70 to 110 bison and some elk. During the tribe's first hunt in Montana last year, tribal members took 26 bison and no elk.

The state Fish, Wildlife and Parks is upset with the tribe's move. Officials say the tribe agreed to take fewer bison and hadn't raised the elk issue.

Joseph Oatman, the chairman of the Nez Perce Tribe's Fish and Wildlife Commission, disagrees. He said the tribe never accepted the state's proposals.
