Joe Saubel, oldest Morongo member, dies at 95

Joseph Francis Saubel, the oldest member of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians of California, died on February 20. He was 95.

Saubel was known among tribal members as "Uncle Joe." He was the last fluent speaker of the Pass Cahuilla language and a leading cowboy and rancher.

Saubel was born on November 16, 1912, on what is now known as the Morongo Reservation. After graduating from the St. Boniface Indian School, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for three decades.
