Assault charge against ex-Soo police chief dropped

Prosecutors in Michigan dropped a misdemeanor assault charge against the former police chief of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Fred Paquin was accused of assaulting a woman in August 2007. He was suspended, then terminated, as chief of police by Chairman Aaron Payment, though the tribe's board of directors has said Paquin hasn't been formally fired.

Paquin entered into a deferred prosecution agreement. If he doesn't engage in any assaultive or threatening behavior for the next six months and completes an assessment and counseling, the charge will be dropped.
