Nez Perce Tribe ends treaty hunt in Montana

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho is ending its treaty hunt in Montana today and will work with the state to address future hunting concerns.

The tribe alarmed the state when it planned to extend the hunt and take more buffalo and elk. The state threatened to sue over the extend of the tribe's rights under an 1855 treaty.

The two sides now plan to draft an agreement to address their issues before next year's hunting season. This year, tribal members took 54 bison.

In related news, two tribal members were cited by federal authories for killing bison in Yellowstone National Park. Joani Roberts and Theda Nightingale weren't hunting in the right place, a park spokesperson said.
