Snohomish Tribe files suit to gain recognition

The Snohomish Tribe of Washington filed suit on Wednesday in hopes of gaining federal recognition.

The tribe went through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process but was rejected in 2004. The lawsuit claims the BIA denied the tribe due process by applying the wrong legal standards to the tribe's application.

"There are certain standards you have to meet to get recognition, and our point is that we met that standard but the government didn't apply the facts," attorney John Devlin told The Everett Herald.
