Washington Legislature passes tribal policing bill

The Washington Legislature on Monday finalized a bill to grant tribal police officers the authority to enforce state criminal and traffic laws.

Tribal officers can arrest non-Indians if they are state certified and if their tribe obtains liability insurance. Tribal courts will not have jurisdiction over non-Indians, however.

The bill goes to Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) for her signature.
