Educator uses $125K grant to study all-Native schools

William Demmert, an Oglala Sioux/Tlingit educator, is using a $125,500 grant to study programs that emphasize Native culture and language.

Demmert believes all-Native schools help Native students achieve. "The kids that are in these schools are open, happy and enjoy school," Demmert told The Bellingham Herald.

Demmert points to Hawaii, where students are immersed in Hawaiian culture and language at an early age. His grant came from the prestigious Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii.

The study could take more than five years to complete, the paper said.
