Hopi woman named to Arizona Board of Regents

LuAnn Leonard, a member of the Hopi Tribe, has been named to the Arizona Board of Regents.

Leonard is the first Indian person to serve on the board. "I was in shock for a little while there," Leonard told University of Arizona Community News Service.

Leonard serves as executive director of the Hopi Tribe's Education Endowment Fund. "She is compassionate about education," former Hopi chairman Wayne Taylor Jr. said.

Leonard was nominated by Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) and was confirmed by the state Senate last week.
