Judge delays trial for Aquash murder defendant

A federal judge agreed to delay the trial for John Graham, a Canadian man accused of murdering American Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash.

Graham, 52, was due to go to trial June 17. His lawyers asked for more time to prepare the case.

The new trial date is September 23. Judge Lawrence Piersol is presiding.

Graham was extradited from Canada to face the charge, which he denies. A second man, Arlo Looking Cloud, was convicted and is serving a life sentence for the crime.

Aquash was Mi'kmaq from Canada. She was killed on the Pine Ridge Reservation in December 1975.
