High HIV rate reported among Natives in Manitoba

One-third of all new HIV infections in Manitoba are among Native people, a new report from Manitoba Health says.

From 1999 through 2006, 33 percent of new HIV cases were reported among Natives. In 2007 alone, 24 percent of cases were among Natives in Manitoba.

According to the report, there are 243 Natives who are HIV-positive. This is the largest number among people who self-reported their racial or ethnic background.

Natives in Manitoba made up 9 percent of the population in 2006.
