Nez Perce Tribe finances gray wolf research

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho is financing innovative research of the western gray wolf.

One of the projects is called the "Howlbox." Researchers at the University of Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit use the $1,300 device to track wolves by the sound of their howls.

The process is simple: the Howlbox howls at the wolves and the wolves howl back. Curt Mack, the tribe's gray wolf recovery coordinator, said it's part of an effort to manage the wolf, which is being taken off the endangered species list.

“We’re at a transition moment from wolf recovery to long-term management,” Mack told The New York Times. "We need new tools.”
