Native women's shelter in search of new home

Native women in South Dakota who are the victims of abuse will have one less place to turn for help on May 1.

The Ohitika Najin Win Oti (Standing Strong Woman) shelter in Rapid City served nearly 700 women and children last year. But Cangleska Inc., a non-profit based on the Pine Ridge Reservation, has to vacate because the house is being sold.

"You know its just been really devastating for us because we didn't know it was coming and the shelter is greatly needed here to serve the women who are battered," Liz Kingi, an advocate at the shelter, told KELO.

Cangleska is raising money to find a new home in Rapid City. "We're hoping and praying that we find something by May 1st. We will have a shelter its just a matter of time," Kangi said.
