CDC study documents rates of infant abuse

More than 91,000 infants under the age of 1 were abused in 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursday.

Of the non-fatal abuse cases, 1.3 percent were among American Indians and Alaska Natives. This was the second lowest rate among all ethnic and racial groups.

The study was the first national estimate of non-fatal infant abuse. Officials say 499 children were killed in 2006 before their first birthday.
