Coaching staff at Santa Fe Indian School resigns

The girls basketball coaching staff at Santa Fe Indian School in New Mexico resigned on Monday amid allegations of drinking and sexual activity, The Albuquerque Journal reports.

Head coach Johnny Abeyta, 51, and his son, J.R. Abeyta, are from Ohkay Owingeh. The elder Abeyta led the Lady Braves to a 321-87 win-loss record over 18 years of coaching and a Class AAA state championship in 2005.

J.R. Abeyta is being accused of drinking and of sexual activity with some players during the state playoffs last month. The team was staying at the casino owned by Sandia Pueblo near Albuquerque.

Johnny Abeyta is not being accused of any wrongdoing. But he resigned because he said the school was wrongly going after his assistant coaches, including his son.

The allegations have been referred to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for possible investigation.
