Indian criminal cases rising in South Dakota

The U.S. Attorney's Office in South Dakota is prosecuting more and more crimes in Indian Country, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports.

The office filed 387 criminal cases against Indian defendants in 2007, according to data provided to the paper. That's up from 311 cases in 2006.

The figure represents a rising trend. Since 2001, the office has filed cases against more and more Indian defendants, amounting to a nearly 60 percent increase in six years.

The data also shows 63 percent of defendants in federal court last year were Indian. Despite the statistics, some on reservations say crime is going unpunished.
