University returns $2M in Indian teacher grants

The University of Utah has returned $2 million in federal grants aimed at increasing the number of Indian teachers.

The school won a $1.1 million grant and another $1 million grant from the Department of Education's Office of Indian Education. But officials said they returned the money because it would have required an additional $1.5 million in state funds.

The grants would have helped 20 students complete the American Indian Teacher Training Program at the university. The program has already graduated more than 40 Indian teachers.
