Blackfeet Nation shuts juvenile detention center

The Blackfeet Nation of Montana has closed a juvenile detention center because it can't afford the cost.

The annual budget for the White Buffalo Home was $1 million. The tribe received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Corrections but couldn't come up with matching funds. The Bureau of Indian Affairs couldn't help either.

The White Buffalo Home has already been condemned. An investigation by the Interior Department's Inspector General said detention center conditions on the Blackfeet Reservation were among the worst in Indian Country.
