Fire burns on Mescalero Apache Reservation

A fire on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in southern New Mexico has burned about 3,000 acres.

The fire started last Thursday. About 200 residents were ordered to evacuate but were allowed to return home after the threat subsided.

Still, the Bureau of Indian Affairs upgraded the fire to Level One. About 250 firefighters from the Mescalero Apache Nation, the Hopi Tribe, the Navajo Nation and local departments are battling the blaze.
