Newberry College drops 'Indians' nickname

The board of trustees of Newberry College in South Carolina voted to eliminate the school's "Indians" nickname.

The NCAA had placed Newberry on the list of institutions with "hostile" and "abusive" mascots. So the board eliminated the name in order to host compete in and host postseason games.

Despite the change, the college's president is trying to convince the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to support naming the teams the "Cherokees," columnist Ron Morris said. The tribe is based in North Carolina.

Several schools have gotten rid of their Indian mascots as a result of the NCAA policy.
