Turtle Mountain Band takes care of Metis cemetery

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians held a ceremony at a Metis cemetery in Pembina County, North Dakota, on Tuesday.

The tribe gained custody of the 10-acre site in 2001. There was some controversy when a Metis group from Canada accused the tribe of failing to take care of the cemetery but now that's not the case, the tribe’s natural resources director said

The cemetery dates to the mid-1800s and was part of a gathering place for the Metis, a term used to describe distinct mixed Indian communities. Some Metis are part of the Turtle Mountain Band.
