Menominee Nation sends most people into military
The Wisconsin county that is home to the Menominee Nation sends more people per capita into the military than any other in the United States, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Based on a review of Department of Defense records, the paper said Menominee County provided more soldiers to the Army over the last four years than any other county without a major Army installation. It was the second in Army recruiting from 2004 through 2007, topped only by a Kansas county with an Army base. The county's population is 4,562, 90 percent of whom are tribal members. Many said it was their tribal duty to serve in the military. "It's the closest thing that our young warriors can compare to our traditional warrior society," Chair Lisa Waukau told the paper.
