Navajo grandmother leads final 66-mile youth walk
Marjorie Thomas led her final 66-mile Walk for Youth to the Navajo Nation capitol last week.

Thomas started the walk 15 years ago to call attention to youth issues in Chinle, Arizona. She was always accompanied by her late husband, Leo Thomas.

Before he died, Thomas promised her husband she would lead the four-day journey to Window Rock one more time. "His spirit is here and he’s listening and he's looking at these kids," she told The Gallup Independent. The couple was together 54 years.

Thomas won't be organizing the walk anymore but plans to join future walks. She said she remains committed to the youth.

"I think all our kids are gifted. They're smart. They need attention. They need somebody to love them and care for them," she said.
