Judge chastises owner of reservation trailer park

A federal judge warned the owner of a trailer park on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Reservation in California to improve conditions at the troubled facility or face a trial.

Judge Stephen Larson set a tentative trial on December 11 to address the fate of the Desert Mobile Home Park. The facility is owned by Harvey Duro Sr., a tribal council member, and is also known as "Duroville."

Larson said he was frustrated by the lack of communication between Duro and the federal government. The Bureau of Indian Affairs wants to shut down the trailer park due to health and safety hazards.

Larson gave Duro until August 22 to come into compliance with an improvement plan.

An estimated 4,000 and 6,000 people live in the park. Most are Indian and Hispanic migrants from Mexico and Central America.
