Judge Charles Kornmann, one of the three federal judges in South Dakota, has taken senior status, a move that lightens his workload.
Kornmann will continue to hear cases but the other two judges have agreed to handle most of the cases. Since he isn't retiring, President Bush won't be able to nominate another judge for the state.
Kornmann and the other two judges -- Lawrence Piersol and Karen Schreier -- were all appointed by former president Bill Clinton. Kornmann has been critical of the disparate treatment of Indian defendants in the federal justice system.
