Data shows no disparity in police stops in Montana
Native Americans in Montana don't appear to be stopped by police in Great Falls and Havre at abnormal rates, according to data mandated by a new state law.

Of traffic stops during the last three months of 2007, 6 percent were Native drivers, the Great Falls Police Department reported. About 5.1 percent of the city's population is Native.

In Havre, 21 percent of stops were Native drivers. Native Americans make up about 17.3 percent of the city's population.

State Rep. Jonathan Windy Boy (D), a member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe, wrote the law in response to complaints about unfair police stops.
