Cherokee Nation claims exclusive jurisdiction
The Cherokee Nation says it's the only tribe with jurisdiction over Cherokee treaty lands in northeastern Oklahoma.

But a land-into-trust application by United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians could change that. Approval of the application would establish UKB jurisdiction in Tahlequah, where the Cherokees are based.

The issue will be decided by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. An official in Oklahoma didn't want to take the land in trust due to the jurisdiction matter.

The UKB and the Cherokee Nation are both federally recognized. The UKB lacks land base.
