Thomas Stillday Jr., a spiritual leader of the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota, died on October 14. He was 74.
Stillday was an expert in the Ojibwe language, a championship grass dancer and a singer. He served as tribal council member, school board member and former Minnesota state Senate chaplain.
"His life was always focused on Indian country, and he gave his all to his community," Chairman Floyd Jourdain told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "He dedicated his life to helping people."
Stillday was born on the reservation in 1934. He served in the Korean War, using the Ojibwe language to develop codes for the U.S. military.
