Shinnecock Nation turns out the vote in New York

Lisa Votino-Tarrant, a member of the Shinnecock Nation of New York, made it her goal to get more tribal members to vote this year.

Votino-Tarant volunteered for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She registered more tribal members and urged them to come out to the polls.

Preliminary results showed the effort was paying off. As of 1pm on Election Day, 489 tribal members showed up to vote, more than the number who voted last year.

The tribe is recognized by the state and has a reservation. Its petition is next on the list for federal recognition.
