Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) is trailing Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) as more votes are being counted in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race.

Stevens maintained a slight lead after the November 4 election. But that tally didn't include 60,000 ballots that are now being counted.

A week before the election, Stevens was found guilty on seven counts of making false statements. He is appealing the conviction and won't resign his Senate seat despite calls from fellow Republicans.

Stevens is the former chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and is one of the most powerful members of the Senate. He has used his position to help Alaska Native corporations and to pressure Alaska tribes and villages, who disagree with his stances on tribal sovereignty.
