Shinnecock Nation on 'active' recognition list
The Bureau of Indian Affairs has finally placed the Shinnecock Nation of New York on its "active" list of federal recognition petitions.

The tribe filed its petition in 1978 and completed work on it several years ago. But a backlog at the BIA meant the tribe would have to wait several more years for an answer.

As part of a lawsuit, the BIA put the tribe's petition on the top of the "active" list on November 10. A proposed finding is expected within 18 months.
