Funding restored to Maine tribal commission
Maine Gov. John Baldacci (D) has restored funds he cut from the Maine Indian-Tribal State Commission.

The commission lost nearly $40,000 earlier this year, about half of its budget. That prompted the Penobscot Nation, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township and the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians to refuse to pay their fees to the commission.

Even with the money restored, the Penobscot Nation won't participate. The tribe has severed ties with the state in hopes of asserting its sovereignty.

The Houlton Band said it will participate now that the money is back.
