The Skokomish Tribe of Washington signed a deal to resolve a long-running dispute over two dams that were built on its traditional territory.

The tribe will receive a one-time payment of $12.5 million plus 7.25 percent of the value of the electricity generated by one of the dams. Some land is also being transferred to the tribe.

In exchange, the will drop a $5.8 billion fishing rights rights and will support the relicensing of the dams."The impact to the tribe can never be undone, but this agreement represents an opportunity to begin the healing process to the environment the tribe depends upon for its survival," chairman Joseph Pave said, The Kitsap Sun reported.
