The Maine Legislature’s Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee heard testimony on a bill to create a holiday to honor Native veterans.
The bill establishes June 21 as Native American Veteran’s Day. Supporters said Indian veterans, who have served in every war since the American Revolution, deserve a special honor.
“Anytime a veteran is acknowledged, all veterans benefit,” testified Passamaquoddy Tribal Representative Donald Soctomah, The Ellsworth American reported. “The story of Native American veterans in Maine has not been told.”
Veteran Stan Ginish opposed the bill, saying the state shouldn't single out particular groups of veterans.
