An elderly Native man has donated $40,000 from his share of the residential school settlement to a shelter in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

William Woodford, who is in his 80s, shocked the Siloam Mission when he came in with the check last Friday. The man hasn't used the shelter but said his friends and relatives have benefited.

"This is a gentleman who has had a lot of tragedy forced on him in his life. For him to think of others less fortunate and survivors — that he would demonstrate that kind of generosity — it really says what a great individual he is," Siloam CEO John Mohan told The Winnipeg Free Press.

More than 80 percent of the shelter's clients are Native.
