Cherokee Nation debates ending term limits
Members of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma might be asked to end term limits for tribal leaders.

In 1999, tribal members approved a constitution that limits tribal leaders to two terms in office. But since the constitution didn't gain federal approval until 2003, it's not clear when the limit took effect.

Cherokee Chief Chad Smith filed a lawsuit in tribal court to resolve the issue. He has already served two terms in office and plans to run again in 2011.

But the tribal council approved two measures that would send the issue back to voters. "It should be up to the people to decide," said council member David W. Thornton, who is serving his third term, The Tulsa World reported.
