Cherokee Nation receives $42.5M from stimulus
The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma expected to receive about $42.5 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The tribe will receive $12.1 million to improve roads, about $900,000 for a youth jobs program, $846,000 for a forest thinning project, $6.7 million for health, $10 million for water and sewage projects and $11.9 million in Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act funds.

"This translates in things like helping rural families that don’t have a reliable water system, helping the family who has been on a waiting list for housing rehabilitation services and giving a Cherokee kid their first job to help train them to enter the workforce," tribal treasurer Callie Catcher told The Cherokee Phoenix.

The Cherokee Nation is the second largest tribe in the U.S.
