Opposition to Tohono O’odham Nation jail grows
Nearly 1,500 people have signed a petition to oppose a detention facility on the Tohono O'odham Nation in Arizona.

The tribe plans to build the facility on the reservation. But the site is close to the town of Sahuarita, where residents fear negative impacts on property values and the environment.

Town leaders will meet with the tribe this Thursday to discuss the issue. The tribe says it only plans to house illegal immigrants, not serious criminals, at the facility.

The San Xavier District, where the facility would be located, released a draft environmental statement on the project. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is taking public comments until May 15.
