Virginia Indian council rejects recognition for group
The Virginia Council on Indians voted 6-3 against state recognition for the Nottoway Indian Tribe.

Despite the loss, the tribe is pressing Gov. Tim Kaine (D) for recognition. The tribe says three members of the council shouldn't have voted on its petition.

Virginia recognizes eight tribes, some of whom are now seeking federal recognition through an act of Congress. But the council has yet to recognize any new tribes.
