The Suquamish Tribe of Washington welcomed participants in the 2009 Tribal Canoe
Journey to the Port Madison Reservation on Monday.
About 90 canoes representing tribes in the U.S. and First Nations in Canada took part in this year's event. They each asked for permission to come ashore in an hours-long ceremony.
“It teaches a lot of youngsters the old traditions of our ways of love, honor, respect, courage and how to be one unit,” Leona Nahanee, 73, of the Squamish First Nation of British Columbia, told The Kitsap Sun of the experience.
The canoes will now take part in a weeklong celebration on the reservation that is expected to draw 10,000 people. This is the 20th anniversary of the Canoe Journey.
