Mapuche activists and police clash in Chile
Tensions appeared to be growing in Chile following the death of a Mapuche activist.

Fabian Facundo Mendoza Collio, 24, died on Wednesday. The police officer who was involved is in custody pending an investigation into the incident.

President Michelle Bachelet said her administration has taken steps to address land, education and economic development issues for Mapuche people. But activists said they will continue to seize land.

Mapuche people make up about 6 percent of the population in Chile.
