Former Interior secretary Gale Norton reportedly discussed job prospects with Royal Dutch Shell PLC while the company was pursuing leases before the Interior Department.
The leases were awarded to a Shell subsidiary in early 2006. In December of that year, Norton left the Bush administration to work for the company.
Norton's potential discussions were discovered by Interior's Inspector General. The Department of Justice has initiated a criminal investigation into the matter, according to news reports.
