Melinda Gopher, a member of the Blackfeet Nation, has joined the race for the sole U.S. House seat in Montana.
Gopher, who also has Rocky Boy Ojibwe ancestry, is seeking the Democratic nomination. She describes herself as a civil rights activist, writer, artist and fancy dancer on her Facebook page.
Gopher grew up in Montana and resides in Missoula. She recently criticized the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council for not taking a stand on a controversial health care reform issue.
The state's U.S. House seat is currently held by Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Montana).
