Residents oppose Tohono O'odham jail facility
At a town meeting on Monday night, residents of Sahuarita, Arizona, spoke out against plans by the Tohono O'odham Nation to build a detention facility, The Arizona Daily Star reports.

The facility would be located on tribal land just north of Sahuarita. Residents fear it would be too close to their homes.

The tribe says the facility would primarily house people being returned to their country of origin, rather than for serious criminals. It would have 750 beds but could be expanded to 1,500 beds.

The town council voted to ask the tribe whether it might consider other locations for the facility.
