Eastern Cherokees oppose building near sacred site
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina says a proposed Duke Energy electrical station will harm Kituwah, the tribe's ancestral home.

Kituwah is the birthplace of the Cherokee people. It was home to the tribe's ancestral village and the site of a year-round sacred flame.

Duke already started work on a tie-in station about a half-mile from the Kituwah mound. The tribe says it wants to be consulted about development.
