BIA backs return of surplus land to Fond du Lac Band
The Bureau of Indian Affairs says 18 acres of surplus U.S. Coast Guard land should be returned to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Minnesota.

Tribal members were forced off the land in 1918 and their ancestor's graves were exhumed. Chairman Karen Diver says getting back the land could correct an injustice.

"It is within the collective consciousness of some of our band members that remember fondly being down there with their family so we certainly want to honor that tradition, " Diver told KUWS Radio.

The land could be in the tribe's hands in the next three to six months, Diver said.
