Descendants of Chief Little Shell seek their own recognition
Descendants of Chippewa Chief Little Shell are seeking status as a federally recognized tribe.

Some descendants are already members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. But Delvin Cree, a North Dakota resident, says they want to be recognized as a distinct group.

“We want to be a separate entity of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, with our own self-determination,” Cree told The Grand Forks Herald.

Cree's group is not affiliated with the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians. of Montana, whose federal recognition bid was rejected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

It wasn't reported whether Cree is seeking recognition through the BIA or an act of Congress.
