Campo Tribe wants BIA approval for reservation landfill
The Campo Kumeyaay Nation of California wants to host a landfill on the southern part of its reservation, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The tribe plans to lease 1,150 acres to BLT Enterprises for the project. The landfill will accept 3,000 tons of garbage a day for 30 years.

“We have continued to study our groundwater system and have confirmed our ability to monitor its quality and preserve its integrity,” Chairwoman Monique LaChappa said at a public hearing on the project, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. “We will protect the aquifer that we all need and use.”

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has to approve the lease for the site and is in the process of updating an environmental review.
