Leech Lake Band won't take part in treaty rights protest
The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Indians of Minnesota said the tribe will not take part in a fishing rights protest.

A tribal attorney said the May 14 protest was being held to assert fishing rights under the 1854 treaty. But the tribal council said it hasn't authorized the protest and is encouraging its members to stay home.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 1999 ruled that the treaty preserved fishing, hunting and gathering rights on ceded lands.
