Alutiiq community celebrates 15th anniversary of museum

The Alutiiq Museum in Kodiak, Alaska, celebrated its 15th anniversary on May 15.

The museum was originally funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council. "Alutiiq people didn't have a place to store all of these wonderful things," deputy director Amy Steffian, who was the first curator, told The Kodiak Daily Mirror.

We started with an empty building 15 years ago, built exhibits in it, filled it and created policies and reached the highest level of professional conduct," Steffian added.

Eight Alutiiq tribes and organizations support the museum today. They are raising more money to expand the facility and hire more staff.
