Five students have created the first sorority chapter at Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas.
Corey LeRoy, Ariane Franklin, Taryn Anquoe, Krystal Jumping Elk and Lara O’Toole joined Alpha Pi Omega, the oldest Native American sorority. They are working towards obtaining provisional status for their chapter, with permanent status expected in summer 2011.
“We can offer people to just come and hang out with,” LeRoy told The Lawrence Journal-World. “We don’t party; we try to keep away from that. It would just be a positive thing for them to be a part of.”
LeRoy and the other members also started another organization, Haskell Women for the Betterment of All Women, for women who are interested in a support group but not the sorority.
